A psychologist is someone who studies the mind and behavior of humans and animals. This profession requires a Ph.D., which is a post-graduate degree. Most typically, the role of a psychologist is one who deals with patients suffering mental health problems in counseling or psychotherapy. Although clinical psychology is a common role of psychologists, it is just one area of specialization.
A psychiatrist is a physician who specializes in psychiatry and is certified in treating mental disorders. All psychiatrists are trained in diagnostic evaluation and in psychotherapy. And, as part of their evaluation of the patient, psychiatrists are one of only a few mental health professionals who may prescribe psychiatric medication, conduct physical examinations, order and interpret laboratory tests and electroencephalograms, and may order brain imaging studies such as computed tomography or computed axial tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography scanning. For these reasons, all psychiatrists are M.D.’s with at least eight years of post-graduate education.
Licensed Clinical Social Workers are mental health providers, who must hold a license, or in some cases a national certification, before receiving their titles. These professionals often work with children and have additional education, though less than either a psychologist or psychiatrist. They are not allowed to prescribe medication and generally work in offices rather than hospitals.
